I came home this past Friday to a nice surprise from planet ultra: my King of the Mountains jersey and shorts! The jersey and shorts not only look great, the quality is tiptop as well. Take a look:

Thanks planet ultra! Can’t wait for next year’s KOM rides.

I think the turn around from the time I sent in my order/check to receiving the goods from planet ultra was about two months. Now, that may seem like a long time but in comparison to the guys from Gran Fondo San Diego, it’s a model of efficiency. The Gran Fondo people still have not delivered the jersey they owe me. If you’re wondering just what the hell I’m talking about, here’s the background. This past March, I rode in the inaugural Gran Fondo San Diego. The ride fee was a bit steep at $99 but that high cost was justified by the promise that everyone who signs up gets a Gran Fondo jersey. It turned out to be a great event and I wrote up a pretty positive review of it. Now, their website stated something along the lines of “participants will receive their jersey 4-6 weeks after the ride.” I thought, “no big deal, as long as I get it.”

Fast forward a couple of months. It’s now may and I decided to try to check in on the status of my jersey. I emailed the contact link from the website a few times but didn’t hear anything back. Noting but a canned auto-reply. Then, mid-July, I got a reply:

We had production problems with our first jersey reorder and had to start again in May.
The new order is now being processed. We’ll email you when we have a firm delivery date.
We have you down for a size “large”.
Thanks for your patience; you WILL receive your jersey.

Oh, sweet. It only took me 2+ months of emailing to pry that response out of you. And the response is a stern yet ambiguous guarantee. Wow, where do I sign up for next year’s ride? I can’t get enough of this kind of treatment. You’d think after dicking around for ~4 months that they would have some kind of ETA on the jerseys. OK, so there’s a slight possibility I could be misinterpreting the tone of that email but I think the actions speak for themselves.

Anyway, it’s been nearly two more months and I still haven’t heard a thing. At this point, I’m not counting on seeing a jersey from them. Unless a jersey miraculously shows up in the next month or two, I won’t be doing Gran Fondo next year.

This post is waaay overdue but I think I’ve got a good excuse. The Monday following the Endurathon (July 13th), I had my appendix out. I won’t really get too deep into that mess but I will say it was painful, there were signs of things being wrong the week leading up to the race and I’m still recovering from the surgery. I did make it through the race without any real issues and I’m well on my way to a full recovery. The biggest downside is that I probably won’t be doing any racing in the coming months. I may even be done for the rest of the year.

So let’s get right into the race. The forecast was showing a 40-50% chance of thunderstorms through the night and for the morning of the event. It was basically a coin flip as to whether or not we’d have rain. Of course, all the buzz around the race expo was “OMG rain! It’s going to rain the entire time! We’re DOOMED!”

When I got up around 5am on race day, the sky was clear. *whew* Big sigh of relief. Eventually, the rain came but it wasn’t until about 9:30. That allowed me to stay dry for the majority of the bike but made for a wet run (better than a hot run).

The swim portion went well and during it, I was thinking how much better I felt than last year. My swimming has probably improved more than anything else this year. Unfortunately, you wouldn’t know it looking at my times. My swim time this year was just over four minutes slower than last year. I’m blaming this on me basically going way off the swim course. Since I’m a better swimmer these days, I just put my head down and go. Last year it was more like swim 25-50 yards, pop my head up to see where I’m at, repeat. It’s pretty hard to get off track with that swimming style. Contrast last year’s style with this year where I was swimming a few hundred yards before looking up and you can hopefully understand how I got off course. At one point, I had a race volunteer in a canoe flagging me down and re-directing me back to the course. Oh well…I did feel much better this year coming out of the water. One other thing I’ll mention is that this year wetsuits were officially allowed as the water temp. was right at the cut off of 78 degrees. I wore mine. As always, it made things feel a bit easier. Too bad it doesn’t have any mechanism to keep me on course.

The bike portion of the race was pretty boring and borderline disappointing. I got off to a rough start and probably went a little too hard out of the gate. I was glued in aero and, as a result, felt like my right quad was going to cramp about 45 minutes into the ride. I realized I hadn’t been moving around so I sat up and got out of a saddle for a little while and that got rid of the crampy feelings. From then on I kept myself moving around to ward off any sign of cramps.

The course couldn’t be much flater. I heard some describe it as rolling hills but really, it’s just flat. After all, that’s what central Indiana is, flat.

I say the ride was “borderline disappointing” because I was only 0.5 mph faster than last year. I was hoping for a 1-2 mph improvement over last year since I’ve done so much cycling this year and I was on a new, tri specific bike. It did seem to be a bit windier than last year but I’m not going to use that as an excuse.

For the most part, the roads for the ride are great. But about fifty miles in that changes. The only way the road could get worse is if it weren’t paved at all. Luckily, it’s only about six miles. After that stretch, I was more than ready to get to the run.

Once I hit the run course it had been raining off and on for probably half an hour or 45 minutes. This wasn’t really a bad thing as the rain kept things cool. I started off with a pretty conservative pace as I had glimpses of cramps early on in the bike and didn’t want to push my luck.

By the time I got about five or six miles into the run I was feeling pretty good and felt like I could push it a little harder. I slowly increased my pace and managed to knock out the run in about 1:40. That’s about five minutes better than last year. The run was far and away the most satisfying part of this year’s Endurathon. At least I finished on a high note. And I gave myself plenty of things to improve upon for next year’s event.

One other thing to add is a shout out to the Endurathon and the hundreds (literally, hundreds) of volunteers who make the event possible. This was the 30th running of this tri and it’s going as strong as ever. The event was completely sold out with 1200 total participants. That’s about 50% larger than last year but you wouldn’t have known it. Everything was still run smoothly and there were as always plenty of space/resources for everyone. Great job and thank you to everyone involved in making the Endurathon such a success.

And finally, the results: my total time was 4:51:08 which put me in 9th place in my age group and 68th (out of even 700) overall. View all Muncie Endurathon results.

Well, almost. The Muncie Endurathon cannot get here soon enough. I’m just ready to do this thing already. I’m flying back to Indiana on Thursday but that still feels like weeks away. The event has constantly been on my mind lately. I’ve been obsessing over everything from how I’ll handle the transitions to what the weather will be like in good ole Muncie (40% chance of t-storms on Sunday, booo).

I spent a little time packing up my bike tonight. Did it go smoothly? Of course not. Turns out Cannondale’s future of bottom bracket technology is just big enough to cause the bike to sit up too high in the case to use the bolt to secure the bike frame to the frame in the case. I made a quick trip to lowe’s in the hopes of picking up a bolt that would make it all work. But did that work? No. Why would it be that easy? I ended up using four zip ties to lash the chainstays to the frame in the case. Here’s a shot of what the bike looks like all packed up:

It’s hard to tell, but there’s a 2009 Cannondale Slice 3 in there. I strapped pipe insulation to most of the tubes in the hopes that the insulation with keep the frame from getting dinged up. Even though my wheels are packed up too, I’ll probably re-visit them tomorrow night and get some more padding around them. Traveling with all this expensive gear is way too stressful. Thursday night can’t get here soon enough…

Well, I made it. I finished my seven races in nine weeks with the final triathlon of the LA Tri Series on Sunday. The last couple of months have been crazy busy.

Sunday started early and I was on my way to Bonelli Park in San Dimas by 6:30 a.m. The weather was once again perfect, hovering in the low-to-mid-60s with some cloud cover. The sun eventually broke through and was beating down during the run.

Each event in this tri series has been progressively longer with the third and final tri being Olympic distance. I was a bit nervous about the swim but it turned out to be fine. Someday I’ll have some confidence in my swimming abilities.

Even though I came out of the water feeling pretty strong, the start of the race and first couple hundred meters of the swim were pretty hectic. Usually I’m pretty good about getting to the outside of the pack and finding some space. That wasn’t the case on Sunday. I was smack in the middle the pack. It was literally touch and go. The first couple hundred meters went like this: two or three strokes, run into someone’s feet, breaststroke for a little while, repeat. When I did find some space, it still took me a while to find a groove for my breathing. I’m thinking I need to put a little more effort into my swim warmup to get myself going earlier in the swim.

The bike went well but, since the swim was a bit longer than the previous tri’s, I didn’t pass as many people as I did in the previous two events. I still made up some ground though. I also realized that the Bonelli bike course is basically rolling hills. I’m not sure why this had eluded me before, but it’s definitely hilly. Of the 8 mile loop, I’d say 5-6 miles are spent on hills and only a couple of miles are actually flat.

Going into the run my legs felt a bit drained so I was pretty conservative for the first few miles. The run leg of these tri’s has to be my favorite part of the race. It’s a nice rolling course and a good portion of it is dirt. The scenery isn’t great but it does vary quite a bit as you basically run around the lake. The course winds around quite a bit too so that keeps you pretty alert. At one point, the course goes through the RV section of the park and this was the only part of the race where I saw any real drama.

Just as I was entering the RV park, I heard a couple of guys approaching. I guess the best way to describe them would be as a Batman and Robin type duo (actually, that fits pretty well, even down to the ambiguous nature of the dynamic duo’s relationship). Anyway, Batman was a big dude, probably about 6’5″, 220 lbs. At first glance, he definitely came off as more of a meathead than a triathlete. Robin was, well…Robin. Much smaller guy, following closely on Batman’s heels. Just as they passed me, a family was approaching. Everyone in the family was walking, except a little girl (who couldn’t have been older than four), who was on a bike. A very small, very pink bike. It may have even had training wheels. The next thing I know, I hear Batman scream “MOVE! GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!” He was yelling at the little girl. I was pretty surprised as I couldn’t see how a little four year old girl could be such a threat to meathead Batman. Batman was able to evade the little girl, but nonetheless, he was all kinds of flustered. He proceeded to enumerate his frustrations with the little girl, but only referred to her as “that bike.” I distinctly remember hearing, “Did you see that?! That damn bike almost took me out!” The way he was describing it, you would think a some fat biker on a Harley just tried to run him down. I was just behind them at this point and couldn’t help but laugh. Eventually they pulled away.

Before I knew it, I saw the sign for “one mile to go” so I kicked it up. Unfortunately, the dynamic duo was out of reach at this point but I did manage to keep a few people from catching/passing me.

My total time was 02:24:09. Pretty solid finish. My time put me fourth in my age group and 29th overall. This race was definitely more competitive than the previous two so I’m happy with how I finished. Browse the complete results for event #3 in the LA Tri Series.

I haven’t been able to find the results for the complete series but I’m pretty sure I finished second in my age group and in the top 20, maybe top 15, overall.

One other thing I’ll add about this race was that the course was much more clearly marked than the previous two races. Maybe people voicing their displeasure with the course marking finally had an impact on the event staff. Regardless, all race courses at Bonelli should be as clearly marked as they were on Sunday.

From here, things wind down quite a bit. My next race is the Muncie Endurathon on July 12th. I’ve got my eye on a couple of other half ironman triathlons and at least one other bike century later this year but nothing is certain yet. I’ll update my race schedule as I figure things out.

My total time for all three races came out to 18:19:00. 18 hours…crazy. That was good enough for 12th out of 107. Gotta say I surprised myself with how well I did. I registered for these things just thinking it would be an accomplishment to finish. I never expected to do so well. I gotta give some credit for such a good result to Kurt. All the training we did (and the intensity of said training) made this happen. I haven’t decided if I’m going to do the series again next year…I’ll make up my mind in about six months or so.

I also found video of a short interview immediately after finishing Breathless:

Heartbreak 100 wrapped up Saturday afternoon which brought the 2009 King of the Mountains Challenge to a close. It’s over and I did it. Never have a pair of socks made me so happy:

Socks are a weird thing to give for a finishing such a monumental task. Maybe Planet Ultra is trying to do something like the badwater belt buckle thing…who knows. I can’t decide if I should wear them proudly or frame them. I’ll probably end up wearing them.

Heartbreak was no ride in the park, but it was a bit more low key than Mulholland and Breathless. This one had ONLY 8,500 feet of climbing as opposed to 10,000+ for the other two. The 8 a.m. start time was also relatively late so I got to sleep in a little.

The hardest part of Heartbreak for me had to be the the way it started. You left the hotel, rode about half a mile and BOOM, serious climbing for the next twenty miles. I think it was around 3k – 3.5k vertical feet in those first twenty. No easy descent to start (like Mulholland) or easy flat roads for the first few miles (like Breathless); just up. The middle section of the course was a breeze though. From about mile 25-55 there were a few nice descents and fast flats. I stopped at one point and snapped a few decent pics of the scenery, we were definitely out in the middle of nowhere:

I lost Kurt somewhere around mile 55 after the second SAG. He’d been living it up down under and back in kiwi-land for the past couple weeks and didn’t spend much time on the bike. He pulled through and still managed a solid time of 6.5 hours or so. Check out his blog for more about the ride.

The namesake of the race, Heartbreak Hill showed up at about mile 70. The “Hill” portion of the name was very fitting but the “Heartbreak” was a touch on the dramatic side. It wasn’t that bad and I cruised up and over it without any real trouble.

The final ten miles of the ride were a bit of a grind but thankfully I had some other strong riders to follow. I kept waiting for a big descent but it never really came. I think the course did have about 1,000 feet of down those last ten but a strong head wind made it feel pretty flat. I was still pedaling pretty hard right up to the finish.

As usual, I took my GPS along for the ride. The data is up on Motion Based: Heartbreak 100. Pretty much all the data except the distance is junk. The elevation is way off as well as the weather info. It got much, much hotter than 69. It was well into the 90s for miles 70 through 80.

Finishing Heartbreak makes five centuries in the first five months of the year. I’m especially pleased and proud about how well these last three have gone. When I decided I would do this King of the Mountains thing last fall, I was pretty nervous about whether or not I could actually pull it off. At that time, I’d yet to ever complete ANY century. I’ve accomplished quite a bit in the past few months.

I don’t have any more centuries scheduled and it’s now time to shift gears to get ready for the Muncie Endurathon. That means a little less biking and more running and swimming. I tried to get things going in the right direction with an 8 miler around Redlands today. If I can stay motivated, I’ll hopefully get to the gym for a swim workout too.

Let me throw out a couple of numbers: 2:05:12 and 2:05:51. The former is my time, minus transitions; the latter is a guy in my age group who beat me, minus transitions. Yes, he beat me. I was over half a minute faster for the combined swim/bike/run but he still beat me overall. Damn transitions. The only way to describe that feeling is frustration…but it was still a fun race. The silver lining here is that I still managed to place third in my age group and 14th overall .

Anyway, it’s not all about the final results so let me back up. Yesterday was event #2 in the LA Triathlon Championship Series. This race had me pretty nervous as I spent the couple of days/nights leading up partying with friends and making questionable decisions. There were plenty of good reasons (one best friend back in town from Alaska, another best friend getting married plus many other good friends around to celebrate) so I’m not saying I regret anything. Just saying that I thought I would pay for some of it on race day. The good news is that I not only held up over the course of the race, but also that I don’t think I could have gone much harder/faster. I can’t imagine doing much better than I did.

Like event #1, the race started at 8 am. Unlike event one, the lake temperature was in the mid-70s. I actually got a kind of hot during the swim since I was wearing a full wetsuit.

This race was a bit longer than the first but not quite Olympic distance. Let’s call it a long sprint, as contradictory as that sounds. The distances were: 1000m swim, 40k (~25 miles) bike and 8k (~5 miles) run. The swim took a bit more out of me than I expected (it took me a while to find a good breathing rhythm) but I was able to fully recover on the bike and felt good throughout the run. Everything went smoothly (I even found my running shoes relatively quickly in t2 this time) and I didn’t personally experience any drama during the race. I can’t say I speak for others though, as I did witness a few rather pissed off triathletes throughout the race.

Most of the anger probably stemmed from the fact that the course was not clearly marked in some places. This wasn’t really an issue for me since the course was similar to the last event and I always had someone to follow. I did hear reports of some just giving up during the bike leg though because they were sick of taking wrong turns. At one point during the run, I saw one guy drop a slew of f-bombs on some event staff because he had taken a wrong turn and lost a couple of minutes. The guy was a bit more composed after the race, and did admit that it’s his responsibility to know the course, but was still making the case that the course should have been marked better. Live and learn. Even though the name might suggest otherwise, these events are pretty grassroots so you need to take care of yourself.

The third and final installment of this series is on June 7th. That one will be a full Olympic distance and, paired with longer distance workouts, should provide a good primer for the Endurathon back in my hometown.

For those who are curious, here are the full results.

Yesterday, I completed stage two of the King of the Mountains Century Challenge: Breathless Agony. First, let me say that this event was amazingly well run. HUGE thanks to Santiago Cycling for doing such a kick ass job. I can’t stress this enough. The event staff were enthusiastic and encouraging from start to finish. SAGs were well staffed and well stocked. Perhaps overstocked (but that’s not a bad thing!); at each rest stop, before I could even get off my bike, I had event staff greeting me, offering words of encouragement and offering to fill my bottles for me. World class service. The Planet Ultra folks could learn a thing or two from these guys.

On to the actual ride. Kurt and I checked-in and were off by 6:50 am. We ended up leading a pack of 15 or so riders out to Jack Rabbit since this is kind of our home turf and not many knew where they were going. It’s nice to be able to not consult your route slip. We made it to Jack Rabbit trail in under an hour and started the first climb. Compared to what was coming (Oak Glen followed by Onyx), Jack Rabbit is a joke. The only challenging part is that the road isn’t maintained and is just flat out horrible in some spots. It’s completely washed out in one spot. Unfortunately, I didn’t get through Jack Rabbit cleanly. I wasn’t able to completely avoid one of the many potholes and managed to pop my rear derailleur cable out of the bracket on the chainstay. I realized this when I was trying to shift and nothing was happening. Once I stopped and assessed the situation, I wasn’t sure to make of what I saw. I still have no idea how I managed to pop the cable out of its bracket. Luckily, no sooner than I stopped did a very proficient bike mechanic roll up behind me offer to help. He had my cable back in place in place in no time and I was off again. The shifting wasn’t perfect from there on out (and it was extremely noisy, which ended up giving my bike a new nickname: the tractor), but it was ride-able. Just after we started riding again, Kurt realized that the guy who had just repaired my derailleur cable was the same guy who came to his rescue when he split the sidewall on his rear tire during the Mulholland Challenge a few weeks back. That guy is a legend. Huge thanks for saving my ride and doing it quickly!

After making it over Jack Rabbit, we hit the SAG in Beaumont and headed up Oak Glen. I’ve ridden this side of Oak Glen a few times and I wasn’t looking forward to the climb. It probably has the steepest sections of the entire ride. When you’re solo or with one or two other riders, it’s a daunting climb. But, when you have a spaced out line of riders in front of you as far as you can see, the climb becomes much, much easier. Just keep a solid pace and, if you’re feeling good, push it a bit and catch the guy in front of you. Repeat as needed and you’re at the top in no time.

During the beginning of the ride, and especially during the climb, I was really looking forward to the Oak Glen descent. My downhill skills have been steadily improving and I was looking forward to being able to test myself on the descent. Unfortunately, I didn’t really get to push it as I was always pretty close to riders I didn’t really know, so I played it safe.

Coming down from Oak Glen is pretty twisty and you need to stay alert if you want to take any speed through the corners/hairpin turns. Before yesterday, I’d never seen a bad cycling crash up close. In the first big turn coming down from Oak Glen, the guy behind me (probably 100 feet or so back) wasn’t able to hold it together through the corner. I heard some unintelligible expletives, mixed with an angry yell and glanced over my shoulder. I caught a glimpse of a cyclist sliding out of control off the road. He slid right into a road sign. I don’t know how, but Kurt somehow avoided this guy (who was directly in front of him, probably only by about 20 feet, if that). He probably has his mountain biking skills to thank for that. I stopped and rode back up to check on the guy who crashed. He was up and walking around, but it wasn’t a pretty sight. He was skinned up in various places and the lower half of his face was covered in blood. I think he split his chin wide open and that’s what accounted for most of the blood. I asked if there was anything I could do but he was already on the phone to his wife telling her that she needed to come get him. I told him we’d talk to the race staff at the next stop and let them know what happened. I have no idea what happened to the guy, but hopefully he got out of there quickly and was able to make it to the ER. That was definitely the most drama we had throughout the day.

After Oak Glen, there was a rest stop at the ranger station on the corner of Bryant and Highway 38. It’s well placed since it’s preceded by the Oak Glen climb and the next 30 miles are basically a climb to Onyx Summit.

The last rest stop is only ten miles away in Angelus Oaks. You might think it’s worth skipping, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The climb from the ranger station up to Angelus Oaks is by no means easy, so it’s worth topping off before the final push to Onyx. Plus, if you’re not convinced it’s worth the stop, they have bacon. Yes, salty, greasy, pig fat bacon. Bacon has never tasted so good. Outside of the actual finish line at Onyx, the bacon was probably the highlight of the ride for me. It’s a hilarious thing, to see a plate of bacon amongst the otherwise healthy/reasonable food and drink options you usually see at a SAG during a ride.

With just under 20 miles to go, we departed the bacon equipped SAG. The road in the Barton Flats/Jenks Lake area wasn’t all that bad as it’s mostly rollers. It’s those last eight or nine miles that hurt. It’s just a steady climb on about a five or six percent (maybe more?) grade. We took a couple of bathroom breaks but were otherwise able to hold a steady ten mph to the top. We were slowly catching and passing a few riders along the way. With about three miles left, one of the guys we’d just passed decided to stick with us to the end. With about a mile left, he muttered something along the lines of “let’s go” or “let’s finish this” and kicked it up a bit. We hung on and the three of us finished together. Total ride time to the top came in at 05:29 for about 75 miles of riding. Great result as my goal was under six hours. I’d like to think it could have been ten or fifteen minutes faster without any complications but, in an event like this, it’s nearly impossible to avoid all hiccups.

We hung out at the top for a while, stuffed our faces and took a few pictures. Here’s Kurt and me with the famous Breathless Agony Grim Reaper:

If you’re curious about the details of the course, you can take a look at my GPS track here. The distance is accurate but take the elevation numbers with a grain of salt. The actual amount of climbing is closer to 12k, not 15k.

Overall, awesome event and an awesome ride. I’m looking forward to doing it again next year. Also, that’s two down and one to go in the KOM Century Challenge. Only Heartbreak remains, and it’s looking like my lofty goal of doing these three centuries might be realized.

Onyx summit and a sprint tri. That’s my weekend in six words. More? You want more? OK, fine.

Being that this coming Saturday is Breathless Agony, Kurt and I decided to head up to Onyx one more time. And honestly, it was a pretty uneventful ride. The weather was great. Traffic was average and no more or less crazy drivers than usual. Plenty of other cyclists out, probably doing what Kurt and I were: getting in one more solid ride before Breathless.

The ride time to the top was right around three hours. Not bad for nearly 40 miles and 7k+ feet of climbing. We cruised out of Redlands, through Damnation Alley (as it’s apparently known, this was news to me but that’s what another cyclist up at Angelus Oaks was calling the long, steady climb out of Redlands on the 38), rolled through Barton Flats and made the summit. Those last couple of miles up to Onyx were a little tough but nothing like the last time I did this ride.

If anyone reading this is doing Breathless this weekend, you’ll be taunted by mile markers for the last seven or so miles. Most are just silent, annoying reminders of how slowly you’re riding but there’s one in particular that is an awesome sight. Here’s the one you want to find:

39.36. That’s the magic number. That’s the one at the summit. Remember that number: 39.36.

And of course, the obligatory photo by the summit/elevation sign:

The ride down was no picnic, with a short climb near Jenks Lake and rolling hills from Barton Flats back to Angelus Oaks. I was feeling a bit drained but grabbed a couple of candy bars and a gatorade at the store in Angelus Oaks to refuel.

I also took along my GPS and here’s the track. Pay no mind to the elevation, it’s just flat out wrong. Total vertical was probably more in the neighborhood of 8k.

Sunday started way too early with me dragging my ass out of bed around 5:30. The plan was to get up at 5 but it just wasn’t happening. I headed west for Bonelli Park in San Dimas. Yep, that San Dimas. I told a quite a few people I was heading to San Dimas, and the general reaction was… “where?” Come on people, San Dimas. It’s probably the most well known line from a flick that helped shape my generation (OK, I’m reaching but you should know your Bill & Ted).

So yeah, the race. This was event #1 in the LA Triathlon Series, hosted by TriEvents. The weather had me at borderline freak-out status, hovering in the mid-50s. Talking to a few other athletes, the lake temperature was rumored to be a frigid 60 degrees. Being that I don’t own a wetsuit (that will probably change soon), I was now officially teetering on freaking out. Luckily, INCYCLE was there renting wetsuits. I put down my $25 and grabbed a suit. The suit fit well, which probably means it was a tad too big but it worked well for the swim. By the time the race actually started, the consensus on water temp was that it was close to 70, not 60. Oh well, the wetsuit only made me faster.

I felt great on the bike and had to consciously tell myself to take it down a notch a couple of times. I still had Saturday’s ride fresh in my head and didn’t want to shit the proverbial bed on the run. Nonetheless, my bike was still fast but I lost a significant amount of time in T2 wandering around like a lost child in a dark movie theater looking for my bag/towel/running shoes. The problem was that I had neglected to take note of any landmarks or mark off my gear in any way. Add to that the fact that the guy next to me had dropped his wetsuit with a red lining over my stuff and I couldn’t find anything. I felt like those guys combing the desert in Spaceballs. As a consequence, I spent just under three minutes in T2 while my competitors were in and out in just under a minute. Two minutes in a race this short is a big deal and it probably cost me one or two places in my age group. Oh well. That’s two weekends in a row I’ve spent learning lessons. Hopefully I’ll have my act together from now on.

The run was short but slightly hilly. Surprisingly, my legs felt good and I managed to knock it out in just over 20 minutes.

Total race time was 01:15:16 which put me at 4th in my age group and 20th overall. Solid. Official results with splits are here.

This was the first in a series of three tri’s at Bonelli (hence the title of this post). The next one is a bit longer and the third is Olympic distance. I’m still looking for that flawless race performance and, if I can get my head out of my ass during transitions, I think it’s within reach.

Just short of two hours ago, I completed the Run Through Redlands half marathon. My unofficial time was 01:39:47. That’s about a 7:35 mile pace. Not bad, but I set my target time at 01:30:00. Pretty ambitious, I know. I thought I had it in me. I just didn’t have anything left the last few miles and it’s pretty obvious to me that I didn’t train enough. Those last couple miles were torturous. No cramps, but every muscle in my legs felt like they were in knots.

I’ve only been running about 1-2 times a week (10-15 miles total) for the past six weeks or so. Before you get all butt hurt and say, “What?! You were only running 10-15 per week and still ran a 7:35 pace in a half marathon? You should be happy you were able to pull that off!” Let me explain my rationale. I’ve been biking (remember, we’re right in the middle of the King of the Mountains Challenge) and swimming quite a bit. I’ve been getting in over 100 intense miles/week on the bike and swimming a couple miles a week too. In my (albeit flawed) logic, I was thinking that as long as I was doing something, I’d be prepared for the run. That turned out to not be the case. I think the main reason I wasn’t able to hold up over the entire distance was I just wasn’t recovering from the tougher sections of the course. On a bike, if you climb a hill, you get a descent. Along with the descent comes recovery time where you can really slack off. It’s still an active recovery, but much less intense than active recovery during a run. Today I wasn’t able to come back from the tougher hills because running downhill takes much more effort than just rolling down on a bike. I should have realized this a month ago but hey, hindsight…. As the title of this post says, lesson learned.

As I’ve been doing on pretty much all my workouts lately, I took my GPS along. Motion Based seems to be having some issues (or maybe it’s me; I’m pretty spent right now) so I’ll post a link to the track later. Hopefully the official results will be posted too. The rest of today will probably be pretty laid back. I’m seeing plenty of stretching, some quality time with my rollers and perhaps in my near future.

UPDATE: Results are up. My official time was 01:39:38. That was good enough for 4th in my age group and 35th out of just over 600. And Motion Based is cooperating too.
